“I just wanted to tell you that I won’t be able to turn my homework in soon because as soon as class was over, my ‘Cuchi’ began to give birth, and I don’t know how long she will take,” said little Juan Gabriel (Ecuador) to his teacher through a WhatsApp voice message that went viral. It earned him the recognition and affection of online users for his enormous sense of responsibility.
This story that exudes tenderness comes to us from the province of Azuay in Ecuador, where a little 9-year-old boy showed an incredible sense of responsibility in every aspect of the word.
It turns out that the little boy, called Juan Gabriel, is a fifth grader in a rural school in the canton of Guachapala. A few days ago, he was supposed to send in an assignment given to him by his teacher Nancy Monroy. He was going to do it, but shortly before the end of the virtual class, Juan Gabriel realized that something was happening with Sandy, his little piggy.
The pig was about to give birth, and the little boy was the only one home to help her. So, he had to put aside his homework and help her during her delivery, but not before sending an audio message to his teacher to explain everything.
“Professor Nancy, good afternoon. I just wanted to tell you that I won’t be able to turn my homework in soon because as soon as class was over, my ‘Cuchi’ began to give birth, and I don’t know how long she will take. And since my mommy still hasn’t arrived from Paute, I have to be there watching over ‘Cuchi’. As soon as she finishes giving birth, I’ll send you the homework. Ok, thanks, bye. I hope you can understand the situation.”

The local media outlet El Universo contacted the little boy after his audio went viral on social media. He told them that he was the one who delivered the first piglet without any help from anyone, around 1pm. Shortly afterwards, his mother – a vegetable seller in a nearby town – arrived and relieved him of his work to go and do his homework.
Nancy, the teacher, told us that her first reaction was one of tenderness and then of understanding, as she comprehended the fact that children also have other activities to do at home. In addition, Juan Gabriel is a very attentive and responsible student, so there was no reason to get upset over his late homework.
