“They’re my children, I know it’s their right, but… I can’t take it anymore. I have told them that I’ll give it to them, but I just want to get through this year because of the pandemic,” said Segundino Castro Mercedes, 78, in tears.

An elderly Peruvian man, identified as Segundino Castro Mercedes, cried desperately in the street because his children were pressuring him to divide his inheritance before he died. The 78-year-old’s heartbroken cry shocked and moved social media.

The sad and regrettable scene occurred in the city of Huamachuco, in La Libertad in northern Peru. It’s been seven months since Segundino Castro lost his wife and one of his children, and he still lives in deep grief.

Segundino’s case was publicized by Antena 9 channel on their Facebook page. The man from Payamarca was sitting on a sidewalk, shedding tears while he spoke.

“They’re my children, I know it’s their right, but… I can’t take it anymore. I have told them that I’ll give it to them, but I just want to get through this year because of the pandemic. The problem is that they owe money,” said Castro Mercedes. His children have debts and that’s why they don’t want to wait.

“Sometimes, I want to stop living so I don’t bother anyone anymore,” added Segundino, who also fears that at any moment his children will kick him out of the house he and his wife built with so much effort.

The elderly man now sells eggs on the street to cover his expenses in the midst of the pandemic. He needs to go out and offer his products in order to survive during this difficult global and personal situation. In addition to this, he belongs to the population that’s most vulnerable to this respiratory disease.
