The locals went wild over this discovery, and the police had to come in and impose order. A large handful can make you rich.

At the end of February, soil rich in gold was discovered on the Luhihi mountain in Congo’s South Kivu province, causing some people to waste no time at all and grab their shovel to extract the precious material from the ground.

The people of the Republic of Congo literally went crazy when it was revealed that the mountain soil is 90% gold. They went with their shovels and bare hands to go check it out. Everyone wanted to take some of the precious metal home.

However, police had to put an end to this, as it was damaging the mountain and the village near the site. They issued a decree on Monday, March 1, suspending all mining activity at the site, replacing the individuals with miners, traders and members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).

Venant Burume Muhigirwa, South Kivu Mines Minister, said the abundance of diggers was putting pressure on a village on the mountain about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the provincial capital, Bukavu.

In addition, it could be potentially dangerous, since it’s common for members of the Congolese armed forces to be present in these artisanal mines, and the disorder could increase the risk at the site even more. For this reason, they were ordered to withdraw from the location until the situation is more under control and a registry of miners is created who are allowed to explore and extract the material.

The decree also specified that order must be reestablished in mining activities, not only to protect lives from danger, but also to ensure the traceability of the gold produced in accordance with the country’s law.

The country is characterized for its wealth. They have oil, wood, diamonds, minerals, making it very easy to find them.
