Gabrielle was born a woman, but she doesn’t identify with any gender. The barber didn’t know that and was just guided by anatomy. #Pride
It’s clear that inclusion and respect are two values that must be strictly considered nowadays, as is understanding. However, not everyone has the same ability to comprehend what’s going on. We can look at a person but not know how they feel or how they identify, which makes it a bit difficult for us to communicate.
Well, this is what happened in Gabrielle’s case. Gabrielle was born female but identifies with the non-binary gender, just like Demi Lovato, but unfortunately they felt disrespected while getting a haircut at a barbershop in Sydney.

Gabrielle’s barber, named Aaron, was apparently unaware that non-binary people existed and made some comments about his inexperience with female hair. He made this assumption, of course, based on Gabrielle’s physique, unaware that Gabrielle was offended by this at the time.
That’s when Gabrielle took to Instagram to express their annoyance, leaving Aaron a message expressing that they belonged to the «non-binary gender» and that he should just cut hair without saying anything about gender.

«Telling me I am a girl and you do not cut ‘girls’ hair’ is frankly sexist and uncalled for. My hair is biologically no different from any other gender. I asked for a masculine haircut, which you do,» was part of the message.
In the message, Gabrielle thanked him for the haircut, but made it clear that they didn’t want him to keep talking in that way that generated fear in people in LGBTQI+ community: «You did a great job, I love my haircut, but situations like these make queer people feel uncomfortable and afraid, it’s why most of us resort to cutting or coloring our hair in our bathrooms.»

Apparently, the barber took offense to the situation and, as Gabrielle shared, he responded with a voice note telling Gabrielle that the were a «woman pretending to be a man.»
«It doesn’t matter if you’re requesting a man’s haircut, you’re still a female. You still have female hair. You’re a girl, everything about you is feminine. None of this ‘I’m gay, now I’m a boy.’ No, man, you’re a woman.» said the hairstylist via his Instagram, which he posted privately.

Clearly, the way he expressed himself is unjustifiable, but his job is to deal with people’s physique, specifically hair, and that’s what he’s referring to. The treatment and thickness of hair change according to gender, and hair can be more manageable in women.
