Laura Muse has the internet divided since there are those who agree with her actions while others claim it’s an «invasion of privacy”
How much is one allowed to do in the name of protecting our children? For Laura Muse, their privacy seems not to be too vital since the mother admitted that she checks their cell phones from time to time. This provoked a great debate on the Internet, as there were users who defended her actions while others condemned it.
The 41-year-old mother, who lives with her family in North Carolina, United States, confiscates the cell phones of her two children, Cohen and Kylie, every night before going to sleep. She does this to prevent them from staying up too late texting or watching TikToks. However, on top of that, some nights she also uses the time to check on what they’ve been doing on their cell devices.

Laura defends her actions by saying «Their cell phones are mine. I pay for them. I can check them whenever I want». She also added that «people think it’s disrespectful or an invasion of their privacy, but that’s how I do things».
The woman, who works as a mental health professional, has no regrets. In her view, she’s just being a good mother who cares for the integrity of her children.

Cohen and Kylie got their phones at the age of 11, and their mother has been watching what they do on there ever since. In the beginning, she performed surprise inspections on a weekly basis, and while her kids weren’t too happy about it, they would hand over their devices knowing it was the price they had to pay for them. Now that they are teenagers, Laura says the checkups are more sporadic, though still a surprise.
While the woman says she trusts her children, she also maintains that her actions protect them from potentially dangerous situations. Laura uploaded a video to her TikTok account where she admits to the whole situation, and several users had things to say on there. For example, one woman wrote, «Checking their phones is an invasion of their privacy and shows that you don’t trust them. They will never be honest with you again». Here’s the video in question, where she added a song that says «it’s no big deal»:
Honestly, the whole thing also confuses me. I can’t tell if what they’re doing is right or wrong. I see both the negative and positive side to it.
