Rahma Haruna, from Kano, Nigeria, became a symbol of resilience after it became known that she had lived 19 years inside a plastic container. Although she was born healthy, at 6 months an unknown condition stopped the growth of her limbs, causing her chronic pain.

So that she wouldn’t live bedridden, her family in Kano confined her to a plastic bucket, where she spent her days between fevers and a stomach wrecked by the strange ailment. Her father sold everything and spent all his savings searching for a cure that never came.

Rahma passed away in 2016, after 19 years of a reality that seems taken from a medical nightmare.
