Sebastián Corro is 10 years old and did not just watch from the window. When the earthquakes of June 24 split the coastal area of La Guaira, Venezuela, in two, he took the hand of his grandfather, a member of a local brigade, and walked alongside him through the rubble of Caraballeda.
He was not carrying toys. He was wearing a helmet with a flashlight, protective goggles, a vest with the Venezuelan flag and the Star of Life emblem. Hanging from his waist were gloves embroidered with his name: S. Corro. There, among thousands of volunteer rescuers, he found and saved a dog and a cat that no one else had seen.
The Mexican brigade members working side by side with him gave him a nickname that he now carries with pride: ‘little mole’. Because when the world collapses, sometimes the smallest one is the quickest to find a way out.
