Gryffin Sanders is 10 years old and was riding as a passenger on the highway alongside his 74-year-old great-grandmother, Darlene Nestor, and his little brother, who is only 4.
Suddenly, the car began veering into the oncoming lane at nearly 100 kilometers per hour. Darlene had suffered a heart attack and passed out at the wheel. “My first thought was, is this some kind of test? My heart was pounding”, the boy told 9News in Hugo. He tried to wake her, but couldn’t, and then did the only thing that occurred to him: he took the wheel and steered the car into a muddy ditch, looking for a place where they wouldn’t hit anyone.
Other drivers called emergency services to help his great-grandmother. When asked how he knew how to maneuver a car at that speed without a license, Gryffin didn’t hesitate: he said he learned it all playing “Mario Kart”. His father, Sean Sanders, summed up how he felt that afternoon: “I couldn’t be prouder as a father”.
