Dona Paixão did not say a word.
At 100 years old, she sat in a plastic chair beside the coffin of her son Adimilson, whom everyone in Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Brazil, knew as “Garagem”. That image alone was enough for thousands of people to feel the weight of what was happening: a mother who, even after a century of life, had to say goodbye to her own son.
Adimilson was loved in his community for his simplicity and dedication to work. Neighbors and relatives remember him that way, and they were the ones who confirmed the details of that afternoon at the wake. The photo went viral without anyone preparing it for that, simply because of what it showed: a mother accompanying her son to the very end, as she had done since he was born.
There are loves that do not fade with the years. Dona Paixão’s is still there, sitting silently, caring for her son one last time.
