Brittany Jacques had stopped believing in love.
At 23, in Ontario, Canada, she was burdened by the words of ex-partners who gave her an ultimatum: lose weight or stay single. She weighed 114 kilos and for a while tried to change her body to please them, until she realized that meant stopping loving herself. That was when Matt Montgomery, a 63-kilo personal trainer, appeared in her life, and they connected on Facebook in August.
The difference in weight between them is 51 kilos, and people online never tire of pointing it out. But what made Matt fall in love with Brit was precisely what others criticized: Brit’s confidence in her own body. He himself said that his past relationships with thin women were filled with insecurities that left him exhausted.
On January 30, amid candles and snow, Matt got down on one knee and proposed. Neither of them plans to let an Instagram comment define what they have built.
