Patrocínio, Minas Gerais, Sunday afternoon. A group of about 20 Brazilian fans were outside a bar, watching the round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway, when a Volkswagen Gol drove up onto the sidewalk and crashed straight into the tables.

Security cameras captured everything: tables flying, people running, a man who managed to jump away with a child in his arms just in time. Behind the wheel was a boy just 16 years old, who had taken his parents’ car without permission. Four people were injured.

What happened next was almost as violent as the crash: witnesses pulled the teenager out of the car by force before the police arrived. He said the car had malfunctioned. He was taken to the police station, treated for his injuries, and released to a legal guardian. He now faces charges of negligent bodily injury while driving. To make matters worse, Brazil lost the match 1-2.
