Kendrick Johnson was 17 when his classmates found him dead, head down, inside a rolled-up gym mat in the gym at Lowndes High School, in Valdosta, Georgia. It was January 11, 2013.

The official version: he went into the gym to get a shoe he kept inside the mat, became trapped, and died of positional asphyxia. But there is one detail the family pointed out from day one: the opening of the mat measured 14 inches. Kendrick’s shoulders measured 19. A later report also confirmed that when the body was returned to the family, the brain and several internal organs were missing, and the torso had been stuffed with newspaper.

A second independent autopsy found signs of blunt force trauma to the neck. Hours of footage from the gym’s security cameras disappeared. The Department of Justice closed the case in 2016 without charges. The family filed a civil lawsuit for one billion dollars. It was dismissed in 2026. No one has been arrested.
