Loren Schauers was 18 and operating a forklift on a bridge under construction in Montana, United States, when the machine fell 15 meters and left him trapped underneath. It was September 2019.
The crushing was so severe that doctors had to perform a hemicorporectomy on him: the complete amputation of his entire body below the lumbar spine, including his legs, genitals, and anus. He also lost part of his right arm. His height went from 1.83 meters to just 81 centimeters.
Today, at 24, he lives in Great Falls with his wife, Sabia Reiche, who has cared for him around the clock since they got married in 2021. Loren has said that the hardest part was not the amputations, but finding out that he would never be able to have children. His story, which they share on YouTube, ended up in front of the cameras of TLC’s program ‘One Day In My Body’.
