Ethan Harrison, 19, a forklift operator in South Wingfield, United Kingdom, went to the dentist in May believing he had an infection in his wisdom teeth. What the dentist saw was not an infection: a swollen lymph node that should not have been there.

In less than 24 hours he was referred to a doctor, had a blood test, and the results came back within 12 hours. The levels were completely abnormal. He was rushed to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where they confirmed acute myeloid leukemia — a cancer that attacks the bone marrow and blood.

The doctors were direct: if Ethan had arrived just four days later, he would have had three weeks to live. Today he has been hospitalized since May 17, facing four cycles of chemotherapy. His mother Roxy, 37, says it could take close to 12 months before he fully recovers his health.
