Kameron Gilchrist, a 25-year-old man in North Carolina, was accused of ripping out his IV while receiving treatment and then throwing HIV-positive blood directly into hospital workers’ faces.

Gilchrist was being treated for diabetes-related complications when he suddenly removed the IV from his arm and began spraying blood toward two medical employees who were trying to assist him. Authorities said the blood was HIV-positive, although it has not yet been publicly confirmed whether the workers became infected after the exposure.

The arrest occurred months later because the man remained under medical and psychiatric treatment. He now faces serious charges and could spend up to 7 years in prison.
