30 minutes of walking a day slow brain aging better than crossword puzzles, according to a study

Crossword puzzles, sudokus, memory apps… and it turns out that none of that is what your brain needs most to avoid aging. A study published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science reached a conclusion that changes everything: 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week, that is, just 30 minutes a day, are enough to slow cognitive decline. 🧠

The mechanism is not obvious. What exercise actually does is reduce basal cortisol levels, the stress hormone. When cortisol remains chronically elevated, it accelerates neuronal aging and damages the metabolic and immune systems. The 130 adults between 26 and 58 years old who took part in the study and met that activity threshold showed a real and measurable difference in their brain chemistry. 🏃

Most surprising is that nothing special is needed: a brisk walk or a cardio session built into your daily routine is enough. Kirk I. Erickson, of the AdventHealth Research Institute, points out that this study is one of the few to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Regularity, not intensity, is what makes the difference. ✅
