Matt Porter, 35, was shaving at his home in Granite City, Illinois, when Karma —the pit bull he had rescued eight months earlier from an abusive family— lunged at him without any warning.
The attack lasted 45 minutes. Porter says he received around 70 bites on both arms, to the point that he completely lost the use of his hands. He tried to hold her by the neck to calm her down, spoke to her, and asked her to stop. Karma did not stop. “I was bleeding to death and didn’t want to die, so, even though I had lost the use of my hands, I used all my willpower and strangled her with my forearms”, he recounted.

According to his own account, he passed out in a pool of blood nearly two meters wide and woke up hours later in a hospital. Porter, who works as a lumberjack and depends on his arms to make a living, now faces several surgeries to regain mobility. His sister launched a fundraiser to cover the medical expenses.
