45 years old, single, and fed up. Parlindungan Siregar arrived unannounced at the home of his neighbor Asgim Irianto, 60, in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, Indonesia, on the night of July 29, 2024. He grabbed a piece of wood and began beating him. When Asgim tried to flee into the street, Siregar chased him and delivered the final blow to his head. 💀

The motive that the killer himself confessed to police: his neighbor would ask him — jokingly — why he still was not married. That question, repeated over and over again, filled him with a rage that, according to his statement, led him to make the decision to kill him. There had also been previous disputes over chickens that wandered into the other’s coop. Small sparks before the fire. 🐔

Police arrested Siregar in less than an hour. Asgim Irianto, a retired public servant, did not survive. And a question that for many seems innocent ended up being the costliest of his life.
