On January 31, 2025, little Thomas Cooper, just 5 years old, died burned alive after the hyperbaric oxygen chamber where he was receiving therapy for ADHD and sleep apnea at the Oxford Center in Detroit exploded.
His mother, Annie Cooper, was beside the equipment and suffered severe burns trying to save him from the fire unleashed by a single spark. Prosecutors discovered that the center was using obsolete and dangerous equipment for treatments not approved by the FDA, prioritizing money over lives.
Four employees, including founder Tamela Peterson, are facing charges ranging from involuntary manslaughter to second-degree murder.
