Andreia Vieira Gaspar was 51 years old and had spent two years saving to fulfill a dream she had been waiting a long time for: undergoing an aesthetic transformation.
The businesswoman, who lived in Spain, traveled to Goiânia, Brazil, and paid 118.000 reais, around US$23.000, for a procedure that lasted around eight hours and combined six procedures on her face and neck, including a deep facelift, eyelid surgery, forehead reduction, chin modification, liposuction, and facial fat grafting.
But after the operation, something went wrong.
According to her sister, Andreia began experiencing severe swelling of her tongue and difficulty breathing. The family says she desperately called for help as the woman’s condition worsened and questions the care she received after the surgery.
Andreia died on August 12, after several attempts at resuscitation. Her sister says that she died in her arms.
The case ended up in the hands of the authorities. Andreia’s body was even exhumed for new forensic examinations to determine exactly what caused her death and whether there may have been any criminal liability.
The surgeon and the hospital, for their part, deny having acted improperly. The hospital maintains that she received emergency care and that the necessary measures were taken, while the doctor said he would cooperate with the investigation.
And that’s where the question dividing social media arises: how much risk are we willing to take to change our appearance?
Andreia was not simply seeking a procedure. She had saved for years to fulfill a dream. But that dream ended up becoming a tragedy that must now be explained by an investigation.
