Danielle Jackson was in an Uber when she realized there was a problem: her driver barely spoke English, and she didn’t speak Chinese.

Rather than give in to the awkward silence, she pulled out her phone and FaceTimed her 6-year-old daughter, Cali. The girl appeared on screen and started translating Chinese back and forth between her mom and a man she had never seen before.

Li, the driver, couldn’t believe it. When they reached their destination, he turned off the engine, got out of the car, and asked for something that wasn’t included in any fare: to meet in person the little girl who had made the conversation possible. The encounter between them was so warm that Danielle decided to share it.
