Deborah Babu traveled to Tanzania thinking that she would be taking a vacation with her daughter and ended up finding a reason to completely change her life.
In 2017, the American woman met Saitoty Babu on the beaches of Zanzibar, a man 30 years younger than her who belonged to the Maasai community and sold souvenirs. They took a photograph, exchanged numbers, and began talking. Little by little, what seemed like a passing encounter ended up becoming a relationship.
When Deborah returned to the United States, the two remained in contact, and Saitoty eventually proposed to her. The 30-year age difference initially raised doubts for her, but it was her own children who encouraged her to move forward if she was truly happy.
Deborah then traveled some 15 thousand kilometers to return to Tanzania. In 2018, they celebrated a traditional Maasai wedding, and she ended up building a new life alongside him and his family.
The couple has faced criticism over their age difference, and there are even people who claim that they look like grandmother and grandson. But Deborah is clear about it: she never imagined marrying someone much younger, but she says she is happy with the life she chose alongside him.
