Stacey Fazenbaker had a simple routine that morning, August 13: pick up her granddaughter Scottie, who was just 10 months old, and drop her off at daycare before going to work.
She didn’t. She drove straight to the parking lot of Owensboro Health Multicare, in Madisonville, Kentucky, and went inside to begin her shift as a family physician around 8 a.m. The baby remained in the back seat. Outside, the thermometer read 95°F. Inside the car, the temperature climbed to 115°F.
No one noticed until Micah, Scottie’s father, went to pick her up from daycare and discovered she had never been brought there. He alerted his wife, 33-year-old Sydni, and she called her mother. Fazenbaker ran out of the hospital with her coworkers, but there was nothing anyone could do. Madisonville police and Kentucky Child Protective Services are investigating the case, awaiting the autopsy results. So far, no charges have been filed.
