Dorothy Fletcher, 67, was traveling from Manchester to Florida in November 2003. She was going to her daughter Caroline’s wedding. Mid-flight, her heart began to fail.
The crew asked for medical assistance over the loudspeaker, as happens in any emergency. But there were not just one or two doctors on that plane: 15 cardiologists traveling together to a conference in Orlando stood up. Within seconds, Dorothy had a team of specialists working on her with the onboard medical kit.
The pilot diverted the flight and made an emergency landing in North Carolina, where she was admitted to intensive care at a hospital in Charlotte. She recovered in time to attend her daughter’s wedding in Florida, never knowing who the doctors were who saved her life at 10 thousand meters up.
