In 2013, Maria Chelysheva, an 8-year-old girl, became the only survivor of her family after a strange tragedy occurred in Russia.

It all began when her father, Mikhail Chelyshev, 42, went down to the basement of the house to get potatoes for lunch. The tubers had been stored for too long in an enclosed space and had decomposed, releasing toxic gases.

Seeing that he did not return, his wife and son went to look for him, but they also collapsed. Shortly afterward, Maria’s 68-year-old grandmother tried to help them and died in the same way.

Maria was saved because she was the only one who never entered the basement.
