Willie Murphy is 82 years old and afraid of nothing.
One night in November 2019, at her home in Rochester, New York, a man knocked on her door asking her to call an ambulance because he said he was sick. She called the police, but she did not let him in. That enraged him so much that he forcibly broke down the door.
What the intruder did not know was that Willie trains at the Maplewood YMCA, competed in powerlifting that same year, and can deadlift 225 pounds. She hit him with a table until it broke, stomped on him when he fell to the floor, emptied a bottle of baby shampoo over him, and still wrestled with him over the handle of a broom as he tried to get up. When the police arrived minutes later, the man ended up in an ambulance on his way to the hospital.
She stayed in her home, calm, as if nothing had happened.
