Des Monahan is 84 years old, lives in Waterford, Ireland, and does something few husbands would do: he learned makeup from scratch. Not for himself. For Mona, his 83-year-old wife of 56 years, whose eyesight is slowly fading due to an irreversible illness.
It all began when he accompanied her to a makeup session before a birthday party. There, he asked the professional, Rosie O’Driscoll, to teach him as well. Months later, he already knew how to apply lipstick, blush, and bronzing powder with the same delicacy as a professional.
Their story reached so far that Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, invited them to a masterclass in London. But what truly moves people is not the fame: it is an 84-year-old man choosing, every morning, to keep making the woman he loves feel beautiful.
