Nobody on that beach imagined that a girl would end up understanding the danger before the adults.
Tilly Smith was 10 years old when she traveled with her family to Thailand in December 2004. While they were at Mai Khao Beach, she began to notice that the ocean was behaving strangely: the water was receding quickly, and bubbles and foam were appearing on the surface.
The scene seemed familiar to her. In a geography class, her teacher had explained what could happen before a tsunami and had shown images of how the sea could recede before a huge wave arrived.
Tilly began insisting to her parents that they had to get out of there. At first, they didn’t understand the urgency, but the girl was so convinced that they ended up alerting the hotel staff. The warning allowed tourists and workers to begin moving away from the beach.
Minutes later, the Indian Ocean tsunami reached the Thai coast. The beach where Tilly was managed to be evacuated, and her reaction was later recognized as key to helping many people get to safety.
She was only 10 years old, but that day, a geography class stopped being a subject for a test and became something that could save lives.
