She couldn’t give them back everything they had lost, but she could give them something new to hug.
Sadie Hutson is 12 years old and lives in North Carolina. The idea began when a disaster response specialist with the Red Cross asked for donations because they were running out of stuffed animals to give to children affected by house fires and other emergencies.
With her mom, Sadie began visiting thrift stores in search of bears and other used stuffed animals. Then they washed them, repaired the seams, replaced the stuffing when necessary, and got them ready to find new owners.
The work took months and was done entirely by hand. In the end, they managed to restore 114 stuffed animals, which were given to the Red Cross of North Carolina so they could bring comfort to children who had just gone through a traumatic experience.
Sadie herself said that hearing the stories of those families broke her heart a little, and that was exactly why she wanted to do something. Her gesture turned discarded toys into small sources of comfort for children who, in many cases, had just lost much of their belongings.
At 12 years old, Sadie understood that sometimes helping doesn’t mean being able to fix everything, but rather offering a little love just when someone else needs it.
