In 2009, Canadian folk singer Taylor Mitchell lost her life after being attacked by coyotes while walking alone on the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. She was 19 years old and had recently been nominated for a music award in Canada.

Hikers who arrived at the scene found the young woman’s belongings and traces of DNA on the path. Shortly afterward, they found her gravely injured among the trees, while one of the coyotes remained on top of her body. Although she was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, she stopped breathing hours later due to the severity of the bites.

Investigations concluded that the animals had changed their behavior due to the scarcity of food in the area and were hunting larger prey than usual.
