Siwan Tamang is just two and a half years old.
On August 18, in Bhagar, a hamlet within Gaindakot, Nepal, his grandmother Hema Kumari Ale set out before dawn for the Shankhadevi Community Forest to gather mushrooms, as she did almost every morning. The boy followed her without anyone noticing. When Hema Kumari returned home, the little boy was nowhere nearby.
The alarm was raised immediately throughout the community. Neighbors, the Gaindakot and Rajahar Area Police Offices, and the Beldiya Police Post joined a search that would last almost 50 hours, day and night, inside a forest so dense that it erases paths and confuses even adults. Every hour that passed without news meant another hour of exposure to the cold, dehydration, and the local wildlife for a child who still does not know how to tie his shoes.
It was only two days later that rescue teams found him alive in the same wooded area, exhausted but unharmed. For his family, which had spent 50 hours imagining the worst, it was the ending they had almost stopped expecting.
