Arelis Sarahí Cruz Carranza, the 23-year-old woman whom police arrested in the La Unión neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, had a story that would have broken many people’s hearts. According to investigators, on April 21 and June 1, 2026, she made people believe that two strangers were holding her and demanding money for her release.

To make the deception seem believable, she allegedly used artificial intelligence tools and created images showing injuries and bruises on her body. She also used apparently fake hospital documents, making it seem as though she was injured and hospitalized. The images reached her family and, above all, her partner, the man she was trying to convince to pay.

According to reports, it was her own family members who reported the kidnappings. With the first deception, she allegedly obtained a deposit of 74 dollars.

According to the police report, when they found her, she allegedly admitted that she had planned both kidnappings because she needed to pay off debts. The DPI and the National Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested her on October 14 under a warrant issued by the Choluteca Court of Letters. She faces charges of simulating a nonexistent offense and using false documents, and the judicial process is ongoing.
