Briana Folk was in the shower when it all began.
It was the early hours of Saturday, October 10, around 5:30, at a relative’s house in Atlanta. She was 23 and had no idea she was expecting a baby: she was still getting her period and had hardly noticed any changes in her body, her mother, Michelle Richmond, said.
In the midst of the surprise, she gave birth on her own, cut the umbilical cord, and spent nearly an hour with the newborn before asking for help. Her family called 911, and they were both taken to the hospital.
The little girl, Makila Miracle Atkins, was born weighing about 2,35 kilos. Her grandmother confirmed that she is healthy, feeding well, and has already passed her hearing test. When asked how she felt about being a mom, Briana didn’t hesitate: she said she loves her and will do everything she can to care for her.
