Kane Watson was 28 years old and playing with his children at Muriwai Beach, New Zealand, when he decided to dig a hole in a sand dune beside them.
The dune suddenly collapsed and completely buried him. His partner Jasmine and his stepchildren watched as people tried to get him out for more than 15 minutes, trapped beneath a weight that makes sand almost impossible to move by hand. He was flown by helicopter to Auckland City Hospital that Saturday, 23 August 2025, but died the following night without recovering.
He left behind four children, including an 18-month-old girl, and Jasmine, who was pregnant with the fifth member of the family, due in early 2026. Kristalle Tayler, a close friend, launched a campaign on Givealittle to cover funeral expenses and support the family. What began as a fundraiser for 11,000 New Zealand dollars has already surpassed 16,600, with more than 430 people choosing not to leave this family alone during the hardest moment of their lives.
