Noah Woods was five years old when the smoke woke him up.
He shared a room with his two-year-old sister at their home in Bartow County, Georgia. When he opened his eyes in the early hours of February 2020, flames were already blocking the door. He did not hesitate: he picked up his little sister and carried her out through the only exit left, a window.
With the girl safe outside, Noah did something no firefighter had ever taught him to do: he went back into the burning room to rescue the family dog. Then he ran to his uncles’ house, knocked on the door, and raised the alarm. Thanks to him, eight members of his family managed to escape before the fire completely consumed the house. Noah and four other family members suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, but no one died.
Fire Chief Dwayne Jamison said that it was extraordinary that such a young child stayed calm enough to save his sister, go back for his dog, and still call for help. The county Fire Department named him an honorary firefighter, and Georgia’s governor sent him a letter. His grandfather, David Woods, repeats just one phrase: thanks to Noah, the whole family is still alive.
