Bobby Cavanaugh was riding his bicycle when he saw a man beating a dog.
It was the night of December 24, 2024, in a mobile home community in Madison Heights, Michigan. Cavanaugh, 60, was known for his love of animals and for rescuing pets. Seeing what was happening, he got off his bicycle to intervene.
According to family and neighbors, the man, identified as 68-year-old Rodney Beasley, reacted by hitting him with a pipe. Shortly afterward, Cavanaugh was found unconscious and seriously injured in the middle of the street. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

His sister said the injuries were so severe that the family could not even see him at the coroner’s office.
The autopsy report later determined that Cavanaugh died of a heart attack, but established that the injuries sustained during the assault contributed to his death.
Beasley pleaded no contest to the charge of aggravated assault and in April 2025 was sentenced to 250 days in jail.
Cavanaugh saw a dog being beaten and decided to intervene. That night, he went out on his bicycle and never came home again.
