Cecile Eledge was 59 when she proposed something to her son Matthew that no one took seriously at first: that she be the one to carry his baby in her womb. 😮 Matthew, 32, and his husband Elliot Dougherty, 29, had been running into obstacles with surrogacy agencies in Nebraska — a conservative state with no legal protections for same-sex couples. On March 25, 2019, after 18 hours of labor, Cecile gave birth to Uma Louise Dougherty-Eledge at Omaha Methodist Women’s Hospital — natural delivery, no complications, a perfectly healthy 2.6-kilo baby.
What no one had fully accounted for was the legal paradox: in Nebraska, the legal mother is the person who gives birth.
