A bear races across the yard. It is heading straight toward a small child. No one has time to react, except for the family’s husky, which leaps onto the animal’s back and bites it before it can touch the child.
The incident occurred in front of a house in Torrington, Connecticut, and was captured on video. Jeff Tazzara, the dog’s owner, said his pet had previously protected his children from strangers, but had never faced anything like this. ‘You always wonder what will happen if she has to protect us. And now we know,’ he said.
Jason Hawley, a biologist with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, described what happened as the best possible scenario in an encounter with a bear. Even so, he warned that it does not always end well and recommended keeping pets supervised. Tazzara already knows how he will thank his dog: with a T-bone steak.
