Matt Beth suffered a traumatic brain injury that took away his ability to speak, walk, and move the left side of his body. Ten years after that diagnosis, he graduated with a doctorate from Auburn University and was chosen to represent the Graduate School as student flag bearer.
His recovery was marked by rehabilitation, adaptations, and studies in kinesiology. He uses a wheelchair and a computer-assisted device to communicate, but still completed a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate after his medical team told him that returning to university would not be possible.
His research focused on traumatic brain injuries, disability, and long-term functional outcomes. At Auburn, he found mentors, laboratories, and friends who supported him throughout his journey.
