There are people who lose their hair due to an illness and also, little by little, lose the confidence to recognize themselves in the mirror. Francisco Oliveira decided to do something about it.
This Brazilian barber uses his talent to create hyper-realistic hair prostheses for people who have lost their hair for medical reasons, especially children. But his work isn’t only about making a prosthesis look like real hair: he seeks to give them back something that illness has often taken away as well—the desire to look at themselves again without hiding.
Each prosthesis requires patience, precision, and enormous attention to detail. Francisco and his team work so that those who receive them can feel comfortable with their own image again and regain some of the confidence they had lost.
One of those moments happened when a 12-year-old boy, who had been dealing with alopecia for years, received one of his prostheses. When he finally looked in the mirror, his reaction and his family’s emotion made it clear that this was much more than a change in appearance.
Because sometimes giving someone their hair back doesn’t simply mean changing what they see in the mirror. It means helping them recognize themselves in it again.
