Leomar Aparecido Miguel drives a truck for a living. But three years ago, on a rainy night in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil, he saw something he couldn’t ignore: soaked stray animals, with no roof to protect them from the cold.
That night, he had neither tools nor experience. He taught himself carpentry, using whatever he could find, and began building wooden shelters on his days off. What began as a solitary gesture grew into Semeadores do Bem Pets, a network of volunteers that now provides materials, helps with production, and transports the little houses to those who need them.
Today, there are already more than 1,700 shelters distributed among independent rescuers, low-income families, and places where abandoned animals live. Leomar continues to cover much of the cost with his own truck driver’s salary, without a workshop of his own and without asking for anything in return. He says that a small gesture can change another living being’s life — and he proves it every time he delivers a new house.
