Among the ruins of what used to be a building in Venezuela, a cat walks slowly and meows. It is searching for the only thing it knows: the hallways, the furniture, the voices of its family. No one has answered yet.
The earthquakes of June 24, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, were the strongest the country has experienced in more than 125 years. In areas such as La Guaira and Caracas, firefighters and rescue workers from several countries have pulled dozens of dogs and cats out alive from the concrete, many still not knowing who they belong to.
Some owners have already been found. Others, according to preliminary reports, did not manage to escape in time. That is why rescue workers are asking for public help to identify these animals, while initiatives such as Patitas a Salvo try to reunite what the quake separated in seconds.
