The entire neighborhood was being demolished to build a new shopping complex, but in Chongqing, China, there was one house that refused to disappear.
Its owners, Yang Wu and Wu Ping, had been fighting property developers since 2004. They repeatedly rejected compensation offers because they disagreed with the terms.
The builders excavated the land around the house until it was left isolated on a mound of earth about 10 meters high, surrounded by a huge construction pit, with cranes and machinery working all around it.

The image went around the world and turned the couple into a symbol of resistance against property developers in China.
After nearly three years of dispute, on April 2, 2007, Yang Wu and Wu Ping reached an agreement with the developers. They would receive another commercial property of equivalent size and financial compensation for the losses suffered by their business. That same night, the house was demolished.
Would you have held out until the end, or would you have accepted the offer?
