Justine and Huy Nguyen met playing video games in 2015 at university. Nine years later, they decided that their wedding wasn’t going to be a normal wedding either.
Instead of the traditional first dance, the couple — both software engineers — set up a giant screen at the reception and played Mario Kart live in front of all their guests, each seated in their chair as if it were the final match of a tournament. There were no tears or waltzes: there was drifting, bananas, and red shells.
The party didn’t end there. They set up a photo booth where guests appeared on personalized Pokémon-style cards, and even the decorations — menus, signs, and T-shirts — included nods to Mario Kart and Pokémon. Huy grew up with his Gameboy Color, and Justine with her three siblings in front of the console; they continued building their relationship through Osu!, League of Legends, and Pokémon GO during their walks at university in Texas.
They got engaged in May 2024 in Okinawa, Japan, and ended up proving that there are couples for whom eternal love is played at 150cc.
