In Trishuli Bazaar, Nuwakot district, a black-and-white dog stood on the mud where four houses once stood. A sudden flood swept them away along with the rest of the Trishuli River valley, in one of the deadliest disasters Nepal has ever experienced: more than 900 confirmed dead and another 4,247 people remain missing.
As machines remove rubble, mud and timber around it, the dog returns again and again to the exact same spot: where the entrance to one of the homes had been. There it remains motionless, as if waiting for someone to walk through that door that no longer exists.
Volunteers leave it food and water, but it only comes over to eat when it thinks no one is watching. No one knows whether its owners are among the missing or whether they have already been found. For now, the dog remains there, standing guard over what is left of its home.
