He had been rescued just a few hours earlier. A black-and-brown dog was trapped among the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela after the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that shook the north of the country on June 24. They treated his injuries and, as soon as he could move, he did something no one expected: he ran back to the very same place he had been pulled from.

He stayed there. Sniffing, whimpering, without moving from a specific spot among the remains of the structure, while a rescuer tried to calm him by petting him and telling him everything was going to be okay. But the dog did not calm down. He insisted so much that the team decided to trust him and dig again right there.

Under that rubble, an entire family appeared. Venezuela now has more than 2,295 dead and 11 thousand injured, with 137 rescue dogs from different parts of the world working tirelessly 🐕 In the midst of so much destruction, it was an animal’s instinct that gave that family an answer no one else could find.
