Covered in dust and too weak to move, a dog lay trapped beneath the rubble left by the earthquakes in Venezuela. Rescuers found it motionless and approached carefully to give it water while firefighters began digging with their bare hands, removing stone by stone without machinery, without shortcuts.

The disaster figures are devastating: at least 589 people dead and more than 50,000 missing, according to the latest report from the authorities, who warn that the numbers could keep changing as rescue operations continue. In that context, stopping the work to save an animal was not an obligation, it was a decision.

And that decision is what was captured. Because in the midst of so much pain, it was those hands removing rubble one piece at a time, for a single small life, that brought back for a moment something like hope.
