Atlas did not move from that corner for two weeks.
Every car that passed slowly gave him back the same broken hope: perhaps it was his owner, coming back to look for him. But no one came back. Someone had left him there, in a small town in Poland, because they thought taking care of him was too much trouble. Eva zu Beck, a travel blogger who lives in the area, saw him emaciated and with matted fur, and for a second thought he was her own German shepherd. He wasn’t. He was a puppy who had learned to distrust everyone and fled into the forest as soon as anyone approached him.
For days, Eva brought him food to gradually earn his trust, until the dog started eating from her hand. With the help of a sedative, she managed to get him into her truck and take him to the vet. “I felt so relieved that I almost cried”, she said.
She named him Atlas. In his new home, the terrified puppy that no one could touch became a playful dog who seeks affection all the time. Now he is waiting for a permanent family, and this time, someone really will come back for him.
