No one knows how she got there.
The little dog was at the summit of Rucu Pichincha, in Quito, at an altitude of more than 4.690 meters. A citizen alert reported her presence in an area that is difficult to access, and two officials from the Security Secretariat who were climbing the mountain found her and managed to get her under control. She was dehydrated, malnourished, and weak.
There was no way she could make it down on her own, so they carried her on their shoulders. Five kilometers over difficult terrain, with rain pouring down on them, until they reached the point where she could continue her descent in a gondola on the cable car. The team from the Municipality’s Animal Welfare Unit was waiting for her there.
Three possible puppies were also found during the same operation; according to the UBA, they are in good condition. The veterinarians examined her, and she was affectionate and receptive during the checkup. Once all four are stable, they can begin a responsible adoption process.
Sometimes, a pair of arms willing to carry someone else’s weight is all that separates an ending from a new beginning.
