Henry weighs about 544 kilos (1,200 pounds). The pumpkin left in his enclosure weighed 672 kilos (1,481 pounds). Practically an object of his own size, it had fallen out of nowhere, amid the trees of Cochrane, Ontario.
At first, he did not trust it. He sniffed it, gave it a shove, then backed away as if something that large could only be a threat. Farmer Jeff Warner had grown that prize-winning pumpkin at Aidie Creek Gardens, and it was destined for the compost until the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat team saw it passing by and asked for it to be donated for Polar Bear Week.
Henry eventually bit into the rind and discovered that the giant was also food. He played with it like a ball, ate nearly a third of it, and ended up lying down in what the sanctuary itself described as a genuine food coma.
